In the early 80's, the term "SUV" had yet to be commonplace, and those looking to purchase a rugged all terrain vehicle were still left to choose from the large Ford Bronco, Chevrolet's Suburban and full size Blazer models, and Jeep's Wagoneer.

But, that changed in 1983, when Chevrolet introduced the S-10 Blazer. Based on Chevrolet's S-10 pickup, introduced just a year earlier, the Blazer was short, and offered only a 2 door model. From the doors forward, it shared the pickups body. In the rear it sported a sport utility body, with a drop down tailgate, and a flip up rear window. It was offered in three trim packages, from the base model, which was sparse and included vinyl seats and rubber flooring, up to the "Tahoe" package, which dressed up the Blazer with carpeting, chrome trim, and a choice of deluxe vinyl, or cloth seats.

Priced at around $10,000, the Chevrolet Blazer was offered in both a 2 wheel drive, and a 4 wheel drive configuration.

At the same time, GMC rolled out the S-15 Jimmy, which was then, and has been ever since, the identical twin to the Blazer.

In 1990, the Chevrolet Blazer, in an attempt to ward off stiff competition from Jeep and Isuzu, equipped every Blazer with the more stout 4.3 Liter V6, a full size spare, and a healthier set of gauges.....all of which were offered only as options in years past.

In 1991, the Chevrolet Blazer rolled out its' 4 door model.....Just in time to do battle with, what would be become it's closest competitor, The Ford Explorer (introduced in the 1991 model year). The Jeep Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee, also battled for a place in this market.

Also in 1991, a third sister model hit the streets from Oldsmobile. The "Bravada" was a dressed up Blazer that came with a "SmarTrak" all wheel drive, and came with power everything, air conditioning, keyless entry, and a premium stereo...all standard.

Not long after the turn of the century, Chevrolet dropped it's "Blazer" name (except for a Blazer 2 door model), and introduced the a new name and look in the form of the Chevy "Trailblazer".
